If you’ve ever created content online, you understand that it's a lot of hard work. It requires consistency and perseverance. And it requires the creators to create content with intention. As a platform, it was our responsibility to make this journey encouraging as well as rewarding for our creators.

One such way to do that was to help them track and understand their progress. This would enable them to understand what is working for them and what they may need to change for the metrics to move.

In order to provide these insights, we decided to build an analytics dashboard that would provide the creators with all the data points they’d need to understand their journey on our platform better.

When I first heard the words “analytics” and “dashboard” from the product manager, the first thing that came to my mind was a lot of numbers, a couple of charts, and a crammed screen. Not having designed dashboards previously, this seemed slightly overwhelming.

However, it felt right to ask the most basic question first - “What are the things that the creator would want to know about their journey on our platform?”. Below are a few points that were listed initially. After discussion with the product manager, we made some changes to these, which are reflected in the final designs.

Things a creator would want to know - Initial ideation

Total no of followers

Daily, weekly, monthly growth of followers

Total revenue

Daily, weekly, monthly growth of revenue - can show highest of every month (marker like trophy or star)

Total no of live streams

Daily, weekly, monthly no of live streams

Total watch time - live + recorded, paid + unpaid (*unique viewers)

Daily, weekly, monthly data of watch time - can highlight day with max watch time OR highest of every month

Where the revenue has come from (which live streams, which recorded videos, total watch time - show distribution)

No of supporters (superfans) - and their list of names, date supported on

Supporters/followers by region/city?

List of top performing streams - live watchers, total watch time, total views, rev generated, date

In top performing streams, show which questions were asked, show reaction timestamps

Drop off rate/timestmaps for streams - after what point is max drop off happening, at what point does drop off start

How many times your content appeared in searches

Search strings related to your category/content (so that the creator can name their streams better)

List of similar creators in your category? (show ones with more subs etc - learning from..)

Ideas to consider

Want to show them the progression. What has changed from the last time they visited this dashboard? Let’s say they came here 7 days ago and now they have 4 new followers, 1 new supporter and 5K revenue. I want them to know this.
Thought - Overall dashboard will show all overview numbers. People don’t remember numbers. I want to capture even the little progress that they are making and show it to them. This encourages them to do better on the platform and makes them feel good about their efforts.

We can share milestones - it could be a popup or a ribbon or some confetti on the overall page.

Show geographical impact of creator videos. This helps them contextualise their content. example: Most viewed in ‘Delhi’

What should this dashboard be like?

easy to use, information should be easy to consume

creator should FEEL like coming here for insights as opposed to feeling overwhelmed with numbers all around

try to tell a story with the data/info on the dashboard - where am I in my journey, what am I doing right, how can I improve (scope for intelligence)

show insights in an interesting and fun way

should not feel too transactional with numbers all around

Upon researching dashboard design inspiration, I encountered numerous displays cluttered with an excessive amount of figures and graphs, making them challenging to read. It was difficult to read those dashboards. However, after reading a couple of articles on dashboard design, I realised that many experts suggest displaying as much data as feasible above the fold on the screen. This notion seemed counterintuitive, prompting me to delve deeper into the rationale behind such recommendations.

During my conversation with my team lead, we discussed that typically dashboards are used by data and business analysts. They are qualified and skilled in reading data in a certain way and need to view a large amount of metrics at once. However, my user is not an analyst but a creator. It could be anyone, including myself or you.

When designing the dashboard, I made sure to keep in mind that it should be easy to navigate and consume. The creators should ‘feel’ like coming here for insights as opposed to feeling overwhelmed. It should be simple and not overly transactional.

While conducting a competitive analysis I examined the approaches employed by other products. My focus was on companies with a similar consumer-based target audience, rather than analyst-centric. Some of the examples that I found to be very impressive and relevant were Unsplash, YouTube, Airbnb, and Vimeo.

For multiple business related reasons, this project was later shelved. However, what I achieved while working on this project was insights that will remain with me as a designer, and the experience of working on a dashboard that was truly new and fulfilling.
